Barbara Hempstead Named Dean of Weill Cornell SOM

​Dr. Barbara Hempstead, a 1982 graduate of the WUStL MSTP, has been named as the Dean of the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medicine in New York City. Before enrolling in the MSTP, Dr. Hempstead was awarded a B.A. in Biology at Tufts University. She completed her Ph.D. thesis titled, "The Cell Surface Receptor for Immunoglobulin E. Characterization of the Receptor from Human Basophils, Rat Mast Cells and Rat Basophilic Leukemia Cells" under the direction of Dr. Charles Parker, of the Department of Internal Medicine. Following graduation, she completed a residency in internal medicine and fellowship training in hematology at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Hempstead joined the faculty at Cornell College of Medicine in 1994, and has published over 130 journal articles and filed 4 patents. She has been recognized internationally for her work, and is a member of the ASCI and the AAP. Dr. Hempstead was appointed senior associate dean for education at Weill Cornell in 2015.
