I chose the MSTP at Wash U because I was sure it would help cultivate me into a great physician-scientist. During my visits to Wash U, more than anywhere else, I got the sense that everyone would be there to really help me succeed. Thankfully, I made a very accurate assessment. The MSTP’s administrative staff is legendary. They are always there when I need help with a decision, hit an administrative roadblock, or just want to have a chat. My classmates are down to earth and always willing to help, even if it is midnight before an exam. My MSTP classmates’ interests are widespread, which is great when you’re in need of an opinion on your grant, or want to learn a new lab technique. The faculty is collaborative and diverse. Whenever I talk to the faculty about projects going on in their labs, they always mention two or three other labs at Wash U they are working with. My thesis project has evolved out of a partnership between two labs, and both PIs are always there to give me guidance.

All of these wonderful people come together in St Louis. At first, I thought it was despite its location in the heartland of the country. Now I realize that this city probably has quite a bit of influence in shaping the environment at Wash U. St Louis is just small enough to remain friendly and just large enough to always provide a variety of options. I’m on a first-name basis with the guy from my favorite neighborhood restaurant, and yet I can always find some new art festival or hiking trail to explore.

The MD/PhD training path is a long one. My best advice: when looking for a program, find one that has the people who will support you during the difficult times and who will laugh with you the rest of the time.
