Research

Myosin motors perform diverse functions from cellular transport to muscle contraction. Despite this diversity, however, their crystal structures are effectively indistinguishable and the physical basis for the kinetic variability between myosins remains unknown. The Bowman Lab has developed Markov state model (MSM) methods that provide unprecedented access to long timescale dynamics at atomic resolution. I propose to build MSMs for a set of myosin motors with different kinetic properties to understand how they differ from one another. Doing so will provide a foundation for my future efforts to understand the effects of point mutations implicated in cardiac disease.
