Applying to the Medical Scientist Training Program at Washington University consists of two simple steps:
- You must apply to AMCAS. When you designate Washington University you should indicate “MD/PhD Program.” Doing so will give you access to the MD/PhD essay questions. You need not wait to be “invited” to apply.
- You must submit the Washington University School of Medicine supplemental application. Under the degree objective field on the supplemental application, you should indicate either “MSTP Only” or “MD or MSTP.”
We expect letters of recommendation from all research mentors with whom you have had significant research experiences. These letters should be submitted to WUSM. You do not need to send a second set of letters to the MSTP office.
The deadline for application to the MSTP is 11:59 p.m. on October 31; by that time you must designate Washington University’s MD/PhD Program on the AMCAS and complete the WUSM secondary application. We will not consider applications submitted after the deadline. Early application is strongly encouraged, as interview offers are made on a rolling basis. We typically fill 85% of interview slots before the deadline.
The application review process is rigorous and may take several weeks to complete. Highly competitive applicants will be invited to interview with the MSTP at the program’s expense. Interviews are conducted from late September through early January. After the interview, admissions decisions are made jointly by the MSTP Committee and the School of Medicine on a rolling basis, approximately every 4 weeks from mid-November through February.
Candidates that applied “MD or MSTP” may be invited to interview with for the MD-only degree program. This is not to be confused with interviewing for a position in the MSTP. The MSTP’s executive director, Mr. Brian Sullivan, is the only individual to issue invitations to interview with the MSTP. Competitive applicants who interview with the MD-only program will be required to return at a later date to interview with the MSTP.
Washington University encourages and gives full consideration to all applicants for admission, financial aid, and employment. The University does not discriminate in access to, or treatment or employment in, its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, veteran status, or disability. Present Department of Defense policy governing ROTC and AFROTC programs discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation; such discrimination is inconsistent with Washington University policy.
