Research

My research involves developing and applying signal processing methods to characterize novel EEG phenomena in critical care patients with brain injuries. Recently, we described a cohort of young children with acquired brain injuries, whose EEG exhibited slow cycling in the power spectrum on the density spectral array in the clinical setting. We identified very slow oscillations in the 5-15Hz power band, on the order of 2-5 minute periodicity, which we termed Macroperiodic Oscillations (MOs). We developed an index to quantify the strength of this pattern in the EEG, which we validated against healthy controls and pairwise-generated surrogate noise data. Patients with higher MOs index scores generally experienced worse outcomes. Based on preliminary physiological monitoring data, we are generating biophysical models of this pattern and its relationship with aberrant intracranial pressure oscillations and cerebral hemodynamic autoregulation, with the goal of identifying physiological parameters under which it manifests, and potential therapeutic strategies to influence the brain state (i.e. inducing or terminating MOs). We are also applying our methods from the MOs analysis to identify novel slow phenomena in other neurological signals, including EEG recordings from neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and intracranial recordings from adults with Parkinson’s Disease receiving deep brain stimulation.s, and potential therapeutic strategies to influence the brain state (i.e. inducing or terminating MOs)..
