Research summary
1. Identifying sex differences across brain regions of wild type mice using existing spatial transcriptomics data
It is known that various brain regions in the mouse brain are sexually dimorphic. The Dougherty lab has been interested in identifying sex differences and their role in the progression of neurodevelopmental disorders/conditions. My rotation project would utilize existing spatial transcriptomic data to explore and help set up an analysis pipeline that could hopefully be used for other applications in the lab.
2. Identifying differences in long-range neuromodulators in MYTL1 mutant animals vs. wild type animals
MYTL1 is a gene implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders that the Dougherty lab has been investigating. Previous work has indicated that MYT1L haploinsufficiency leads to stunted neurite growth, which could suggest disruptions in long range axonal projections. My rotation project involves optimizing a staining protocol to then investigate whether we can identify changes to axon numbers in mice with MYT1L haploinsufficiency vs. wild-type.
