As a Phase 1, year one student I am primarily focused on building a solid foundation of medical knowledge. I spend about 4-5 hours a day studying, and I like to change up where I study from day to day. On campus I will typically study in the FLTC student lounge with friends. On days I need a quieter environment, I will study in Becker Library or my apartment.

One of my favorite aspects of WashU’s curriculum is the flexibility. Recordings and slides for each lecture are typically available within a few hours. This has allowed me to tailor my schedule, foregoing some in-person classes. While it is important to keep up with the material, this flexibility has enabled me to immerse myself in varied extra-curricular activities while also leaving time for self care and a social life.

Outside of studying, I have particularly enjoyed the many events put on by student groups such as the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), and the specialty interest groups. These events are great opportunities to get involved and meet the WashU community. Between the clinical mentoring sessions and shadowing opportunities, there is ample opportunity to gain early exposure to the clinical side of medicine. The MSTP also hosts a weekly lunch where we explore current research related to our class material through journal clubs and guest lecturers. Finally, while research is not mandatory during this phase, I have chosen to spend a few hours each week working on a project with my rotation mentor.

Off campus, I have been savoring all that St. Louis has to offer. My mornings often begin with a run or bike ride through the Klein Prairie on the east side of Forest Park. On the weekends, my friends and I have explored the park’s many museums, and rented boats from the Boat House. Having grown up in St. Louis, I have also taken great joy in showing my classmates around the vibrant food and music scene here. In just the first two months, we have had the pleasure of attending events such as the Festival of Nations, the Balloon Glow, the Hispanic Festival, and the Big Muddy Blues Festival.
