Research summary
We examined the identities of different clusters of ventral pallidum (VP) neurons that project to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the nucleus accumbens (NAc), both of which are crucial pathways implicated in opioid addiction. We used retrograde viruses and immunohistochemical analyses to trace the projections and utilized patch clamp electrophysiology to characterize the properties of the different VP clusters.
