Research summary
Widely known as the powerhouse of the cell, mitochondria are multifunctional organelles involved in many cellular processes spanning from energy production to cell death signaling. Despite its importance, many mitochondrial proteins still remain uncharacterized. Recent developments in multiomics mass spectrometry profiling tools, such as the y3k Project for yeast and MITOMICS for humans, offer novel insights into the potential functions of mitochondrial uncharacterized proteins (MXPs) in eukaryotes. Yet, further biochemical characterization is needed to unveil the molecular mechanisms by which these proteins may be acting in the cell. My rotation project aims to purify and biochemically characterize C15orf61, a MXP observed to influence cellular respiratory conductance.
